Report: Clippers Re-Sign Dynamic C/F Kai Jones
The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to bring back center/forward Kai Jones on a non-guaranteed contract, according to The Athletic. This is after the Clippers opted not to exercise Jones’ team option in late June this year. Although Jones was unable to play during the summer league because of a sprained ankle, 23-year-old Jones is expected to return to play during the next season.
Kai Jones’ NBA Journey
Originally drafted in the 2021 NBA draft with the 19th overall selection to the New York Knicks, Kai Jones is 6-foot-11 from the University of Texas. His rights were traded the next morning to the Charlotte Hornets. Over his tenure with the Hornets, Jones appeared in 67 games in his reserve position between the seasons of 2021-23 with a mean of 2. 7 points, 2. 0 rebounds, 0. 5 blocks, and 9. 1 minutes per game and 56 percent from the field. 7 percent field goal percentage.
Jones was waived from the team, Hornets, in October of 2023 when he joined the G-League to gain more experience. He then signed a 10-day contract deal with the Philadelphia 76ers on the 15th of March in 2024, then moved to the Clippers on the 14th of April 2024.
The Clippers’ Decision
The decision to re-sign Jones highlights the Clippers’ interest in his potential as a versatile frontcourt player. Although his performance with the Hornets was modest, his athleticism and field goal efficiency indicate room for growth. The non-guaranteed nature of his contract provides the Clippers with flexibility while offering Jones another chance to prove himself.
While Jones won’t participate in the summer league due to his ankle injury, his presence in the Clippers’ training camp will be crucial. The team will evaluate his recovery and potential contribution as they prepare for the upcoming season. Jones’ journey reflects the resilience and determination often required to secure a stable position in the NBA.
Kai Jones’ return to the Clippers offers both the player and the team an opportunity to explore his development further. As the Clippers aim to strengthen their roster, Jones will have the chance to demonstrate his value and make a lasting impact.
