The pitches took a long time to prepare and they have been in the making on Australian soil since October 2023. 4 of the 10 pitches were made for matches while the other 6 were made with the aim of practice match pitches.
“We aim to produce pitches that have pace and consistent bounce, on which the players can play their shots,” said Adelaide Oval pitch curator Damian Hough, who has been tasked with growing pitches in Australia and transporting them to the US.
“We want entertaining cricket, but there are challenges.”
The trays, into which the pitches were split, were transported through a shipping container from Adelaide, Australia to Florida, US in January and since then they have grown in a warm climate.
To reach their final destination, they will be transported through a lorry. Then they will need to be pitched in at the venues and that will take 12 hours to complete.
“I’m excited, but I’m a bit anxious at the same time – there are still unknowns.
“This is a long process. What we do know is we’ve given it our best shot.
“We’ve thoroughly thought through every possible outcome and issue along the way and we’re hoping that they’re going to be some good cricket pitches.”
These pitches will be used for matches and in venues in New York, Texas, and Florida for the ICC T20 World Cup that is set to start on June 2, 2024, with the first match being played between the host, the US, and Canada at the Grand Praire Stadium, Texas.
This is the first time the United States is set to host an international cricket event.
