Jazz Reject Two 1st-Round Picks for Knicks Trade Target Walker Kessler
The New York Knicks have shown interest in signing Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz, but the cost of his services is reported to be high. SNY’s Ian Begley reported that offers for Kessler were rejected, including two first-round picks in the last two weeks. It was said that one of these selections may come with a safeguard even though information about them remains unclear.
Walker Kessler’s Performance
Walker Kessler, who is set to celebrate his 23rd birthday on July 26, showed a strong performance during the 2023-24 season. In 64 games with 22 starts, he maintained an average of 8.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game while playing for 23.3 minutes. During his first year playing for the Jazz in 2022-23, Kessler posted comparable stats, scoring an average of 9.2 points, grabbing 8.4 rebounds, and blocking 2.3 shots in 23.0 minutes per game over 74 appearances, including 40 times in the starting lineup. This data showcases Kessler’s reliable defensive impact and skills in grabbing.
Knicks’ Search for a Backup Center
Thus, in the pursuit of a player who could take up Isaiah Hartenstein’s position and be the second-string center to Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks are eyeing Precious Achiuwa as well. Achiuwa a 24-year-old big man established the average of 7. 6 points, 7. 2 rebounds, and 1. 1 block in 24. An average of 2 minutes per game in 49 games 18 of them as a starter for the Knicks the last season. According to Begley, Achiuwa has drawn several suitors currently and is a few offers shy. New York Knicks, his former team, is keeping close tabs in case he finds himself a new team within the next couple of days.
Signing Walker Kessler or getting Achiuwa would considerably strengthen the Knicks’ frontcourt option. The shot-blocking ability of Kessler and Lob City like glass cleaner on the glass would work well alongside Mitchell Robinson’s shot-stopping ability on the interior. On the other hand, Achiuwa is a role player who thrives coming off the bench, the Knicks would continue to have a strong interior defender to pace the squad for most of the game.
The Knicks are looking to add talent to their team, and they cast their glance at Walker Kessler and Precious Achiuwa. The Jazz has been able to reject offers for Kessler, regardless, the Knick’s eagerness shows their intention of improving their frontline. It is therefore apparent that as NBA free agency continues it will be the moves made by the Knicks that will define them for the next season.
