New York Knicks Face Intriguing Offseason with Potential Big Moves
The New York Knicks are entering an intriguing offseason after a promising season marred by injuries in the playoffs. With their first 50-win season in over a decade, the organization faces a pivotal decision: should they maintain consistency or pursue a game-changer to elevate the team further? The New York Knicks have the resources to target top-level talent. Let’s evaluate the top three potential trade targets for New York.
1. Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers.
The potential connection between Donovan Mitchell and the New York Knicks may continue to be a hot topic until the New York local officially joins the team in blue and orange. Although the club may consider waiting to pursue him in free agency next summer due to his player option for 2025-26, there is a possibility he may sign an extension with Cleveland or another team before then.
If the New York Knicks are completely convinced that Mitchell is the key they have been missing, they should not delay in making a decision. His ranking at No. 3 implies doubts about his qualifications as a top performer.
To clarify, he is a proven star, and having him and Jalen Brunson in the backcourt together would present opposing defenses with numerous difficult choices. Adversaries were unable to swarm Brunson as they have done frequently in the playoffs, a tactic that Mitchell has also faced in Cleveland.
However, if the New York Knicks want to find the perfect partner for Brunson, they likely are not envisioning a 6’3″ shooting guard who excels when he controls the ball. The potential is enormous, and New York could experiment with staggering their playing time to always have a scoring threat on the court, for example. However, since the match isn’t flawless, it’s challenging to rank Mitchell any higher.

2. Kevin Durant, Phoenix Suns.
Is Phoenix’s playoff failure likely to make Kevin Durant available for trade? The Suns claim they will not, but their ability to enhance this roster via a trade is highly restricted. Besides Devin Booker, who is considered almost untouchable, Durant is the sole player capable of acquiring the necessary assets to transform this team around its key players completely.
While a Durant trade is not highly probable, it is still within the realm of possibility. If the scoring champion becomes available, the New York Knicks will pursue him aggressively as they did in 2019 when he chose the Brooklyn Nets over the Golden State Warriors.

Durant is one of the most straightforward stars to accommodate in this league’s history. He provides similar offensive contributions whether he is handling the ball or not, as he can score against any defender and excels at making shots without dribbling (shooting 43.9 percent from three, according to NBA.com). He is a flexible defender with the perfect mix of size and natural abilities to cause chaos as a shot-blocker on defense.
Even though he is 35 years old and not exactly the same age as the 27-year-old Brunson, they both are prepared to win at the moment, so it’s not a major worry. Although playing 75 games this season, Durant’s injury history is a concern because it is over half of the total games he played in the previous four years.
3. Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers
There aren’t many teams looking to win immediately in free agency, so George could have more choices by opting in. New York deserves a prominent spot on that list.
George would be a perfect fit for this team, just like a custom-made suit. He is basically an upgraded OG Anunoby, offering the same intense defense but with a more diverse range of offensive skills that are effective in both main and secondary positions. George’s game has a flexibility that is rare among stars, enabling him to make a big difference without overshadowing other top players nearby.
Furthermore, if George indicated that he wanted to join the New York Knicks, it could potentially prevent them from losing valuable assets in a trade for a star player.
