Kane Williamson will miss the opening game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Kane Williamson will miss the opening game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against England, as he persists in his efforts to recover from his knee injury.
Williamson has been included in New Zealand’s 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, despite sustaining a knee injury during the IPL. To guarantee his complete recuperation, the New Zealand team management has made the decision that Williamson will be absent from the Blackcaps’ opener match against England on October 5 in Ahmedabad.
Williamson is scheduled to participate only as a batsman in New Zealand’s warm-up match against Pakistan in Hyderabad today. Additionally, he intends to engage in both batting and fielding in the second warm-up fixture against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram. However, New Zealand is adopting a cautious and deliberate approach with their key player, aiming to guarantee his swift and impactful return to the game.
Regarding Williamson’s physical condition, the head coach Gary Stead, made a statement.:
“Right from the start we’ve taken a long-term view on Kane’s return to play. His recovery is tracking well and it’s now a matter of making sure he can cope with the rigours and intensity of international cricket. We’ll continue to take a day-by-day approach to Kane’s rehabilitation and certainly won’t be putting any pressure on him to return before he is ready,“
In the absence of Williamson, the team will be led by the wicketkeeper-batter, Tom Latham.
