Jalen Brunson is reportedly considering a substantial financial concession to aid the New York Knicks’ championship aspirations. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, Brunson is open to accepting a $156.5 million max extension from the Knicks this offseason. This decision would mean forgoing a potential $269.1 million contract he could secure if he waits until after the 2024-25 season. By opting for the extension now, Brunson would be sacrificing $113 million in guaranteed earnings.

Brunson’s decision to accept a pay cut can also be viewed as a tactical decision intended to prevent the Knicks from getting captured by the dreaded second apron, a salary cap floor that limits teams’ expenditures. This flexibility could be made decisive for the strengthening of the Knicks’ team and the increase of its chances for becoming the first NBA champions for the period beginning in 1973, in fact for many years. Katz added that Brunson is loyal to the Knicks and does not think about playing for any other team.
