Waseem, Matthews win ICC Player of the Month award for April 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced April’s Player of the Month winners of Women and Men cricket on May 13th, 2024.

The West Indian captain Hayley Matthews won the women’s category while the men’s category was won by UAE’s Mohammad Waseem.

Matthews’ team won the ODI series against Pakistan by 3-0 as she scored two hundreds in the first and the third ODI. In the last ODI, she scored a 44 and won the game for her team on the last ball.

When the time came for the T20I series, she scored 205 runs and became the top scorer of the series.

Talking about winning the award to the ICC, Matthews said that she was really happy to win the award again as the performances led to a team victory and that’s what matters the most.

She said that winning against Pakistan was a big goal and she wanted to perform well and contribute to the team.

As for personal milestones, she said that setting new records and achieving awards is good for her as well so that makes her happy.

Matthews added that the team is confident that they will perform well on the Sri Lankan tour and that they will gain crucial points in the ICC Women’s Championship.

Mohammad Waseem wins ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for April 2024

As for Waseem, he guided UAE to the ACC Premier Cup victory against Oman by scoring 269 runs with the bat at an average of 44.83 including a 56-ball hundred.

His heroics in the ACC Premier Cup have made him the first UAE cricketer to win the Men’s Player of the Month award.

Waseem said that it was a great honor to win the award and he was thrilled to join the winners from around the world.

He added that the award is a big motivation for players especially those from emerging cricket teams like the UAE. Last month their goal in the ACC Premier Cup in Oman was to qualify for next year’s Asia Cup. He said that he was proud of his team and their performance.

Waseem said that the award, at a personal level, makes him happy that he was able to lead the team from the front, especially in the final.

Talking about his century, he said that scoring a century in a big game is indeed a special moment, especially when it helps the team to victory.

He concluded that they are looking forward to the preparations for the Asia Cup and that he aims to continue to deliver for the team with the bat and lead by example in these exciting times for UAE cricket.
