ICC Awards 2023 Reveals Nominees for T20I and Emerging Categories

ICC Awards 2023, On Wednesday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled the nominees for the Men’s and Women’s T20 Cricketer of the Year 2023. It announced the Men’s and Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023 award.

There are a total of eight nations that are represented in the T20I categories. Suryakumar Yadav, who was the winner last year, has been nominated again in the men’s category. On the other hand, Ellyse Perry, a former two-time winner of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, is among the female prospects.

ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year

India’s Suryakumar Yadav is vying for his second consecutive prize in the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year category, having previously won in 2022. This year, he faces tough competition from New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, Uganda’s Alpesh Ramjani, and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza, all of whom had remarkable performances in the shortest format.

In a total of 17 innings, Yadav impressively amassed a remarkable 733 runs at an exceptional average of 48.86 with a hefty strike rate of 155.95.

Yadav’s year began with a stark contrast as he only scored seven runs against Sri Lanka. However, he quickly turned things around with an impressive comeback, scoring 51 runs in 36 balls and an unbeaten 112 runs in 51 balls in the following two matches.

The right-handed batsman accumulated runs consistently, scoring between 20 and 40, before delivering a remarkable innings of 83 (44) against the West Indies in Providence. This was followed by another impressive knock of 61 runs in Florida.

Suryakumar concluded his highly successful year in T20I cricket by achieving a remarkable feat of scoring half-centuries against Australia and South Africa, followed by a phenomenal century against South Africa in a mere 56 balls.

Sikander Raza, the talented all-rounder from Zimbabwe, has once again been included in the list of nominees for the prestigious Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year Award. With an impressive batting performance, he amassed a total of 515 runs in 11 innings, maintaining an outstanding average of 51.50 with a brilliant strike rate of 150.

Raza managed to secure 17 wickets with an impressive average of 14.88 while maintaining a commendably low economy rate of 6.5.

Mark Chapman, the talented middle-order batsman from New Zealand, was duly recognized for his exceptional displays in the shortest format of the game.

In the year 2023, he experienced a remarkable period of success with the bat, accumulating an impressive total of 576 runs at an average of 44.3 in 19 innings.

Chapman made his presence known during the T20I tour of Pakistan, where he showcased his skills by scoring 290 runs in the five-match series and also made a match-winning hundred in the final match.

Ramjani, the player from Uganda, had been a nightmare for the batters during the year 2023. He managed to secure a spot among the nominees for the highly esteemed award.

He achieved 55 wickets in T20Is with an impressive average of 8.9 and a remarkable economy rate of 4.7. In the format, he secured the highest number of wickets among male players throughout the year, with a total of 55 wickets in 30 matches.

ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year

The shortlist for the ICC Women’s T20I Cricketer of the Year includes renowned players in the women’s game. Chamari Athapaththu from Sri Lanka showcased exceptional skills throughout the year. Joining her are Sophie Ecclestone, a spin maestro from England, Hayley Matthews, an all-round icon from West Indies, and the evergreen Ellyse Perry, who has previously won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year twice (in 2019 and 2017).

Athapaththu, the seasoned Sri Lankan cricketer, had an unforgettable year, amassing a total of 470 runs and clinching eight wickets in her 16 appearances in the format.

Athapaththu commenced the year 2023 with an outstanding display, earning the Player of the Match accolade in Cape Town during the Women’s T20 World Cup. She impressively scored 68 runs off 50 deliveries, leading Sri Lanka to a victory over South Africa.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder experienced a remarkable turnaround in the latter part of the year, with the pinnacle being an outstanding innings of 80 not out off just 47 deliveries in Colombo to help Sri Lanka pull back a win in the three-match series against New Zealand.

Sophie Ecclestone of England had an exceptional year with the ball, securing an impressive 23 wickets in a mere 11 matches at an average of 10.60.

In the Women’s T20 World Cup, the bowler who holds the top rank in T20I showcased her brilliance by claiming 11 wickets, surpassing all other participants in the tournament.

In the ICC Women’s T20I Bowling rankings, she achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing 800 rating points with her outstanding performance in the mega event and she is only the second bowler to achieve such a milestone.

Hayley Matthews, the all-rounder from the West Indies, had a fruitful year where she achieved great success. Throughout the year, she managed to score an impressive total of 700 runs and also took 19 wickets in 14 matches.

In the three-match away series against Australia, she delivered her most outstanding performance of the year 2023. The West Indies captain proved to be a significant challenge for the Australian side, as she tallied scores of 99*, 132, and 79.

Despite a remarkably average performance in the Women’s T20 World Cup, Ellyse Perry, a seasoned Australian all-rounder, had an exceptional year. Not only did she accumulate 319 runs, but she also claimed six wickets across 14 matches.

Perry concluded the year on a high note, achieving impressive scores of 51*, 34, 70, and 40 in the bilateral series against England and West Indies.

Perry’s exceptional performance in the shortest format of the game saw her surpassing her personal best and adopting a distinct strategy, resulting in a remarkable tally of 11 sixes in a single year.

ICC Emerging Men’s and Women’s Cricketer of the Year

In other parts of the world, numerous promising individuals showcased their skills on the global platform in 2023. Their remarkable performances in prestigious tournaments such as last year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. 

The ICC Emerging Women’s Cricketer of the Year category showcases four exceptional rising stars in women’s cricket. Marufa Akter from Bangladesh, Lauren Bell from England, Darcey Carter from Scotland, and Phoebe Litchfield from Australia have been identified as the top four contenders for this prestigious title due to their outstanding performances in 2023

Additionally disclosed today is the list of finalists for the ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year – an intensely competitive category featuring four exceptional talents who made their mark in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Gerald Coetzee will strive to replicate the success of last year’s recipient, his compatriot Marco Jansen, in securing the 2023 accolade. He faces stiff competition from India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka, and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra.

Ravindra, the promising left-handed opener, made significant progress in his career during the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 by amassing a remarkable total of 578 runs,  his outstanding performance placed him just behind Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Quinton de Kock.

Rachin Ravindra had an exceptional performance in white ball cricket, accumulating a total of 820 runs in ODIs and claiming 18 wickets at an average of 46.61, his tally stands as the highest achieved by a New Zealand batter in a World Cup.

In 2023, Gerald Coetzee, a right-arm pacer, established himself as a versatile bowler for South Africa across all formats of the game. Coetzee claimed 10 wickets at an average of 21.70 in Test matches, 31 wickets at 23.22 in (ODIs), and six wickets at 23.33 in (T20Is).

He concluded the ICC World Cup 2023 as the fourth-highest wicket-taker, claiming 20 dismissals in eight matches and spearheading South Africa’s pace attack with great determination.

Dilshan Madushanka, a Sri Lankan pacer, also gained prominence during the World Cup. The opportunity was seized by the left-arm pacer who stepped in as a replacement for Dushmantha Chameera due to injury during the Qualifiers for the Cricket World Cup.

 He emerged as a stand-out bowler for Sri Lanka the mega event where he picked up 21 wickets in nine matches. Throughout 2023, Madushanka continued to exhibit his prowess by securing 31 wickets in ODIs with an impressive average of 24.06, while also grasping six wickets in T20Is at an average of 33.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, a 22-year-old Indian opener, has garnered attention with his impressive displays in both Test and T20I cricket.

The left-handed opener accumulated a total of 288 runs at an impressive average of 57.60 in Test matches, while also contributing 430 runs at an average of 33.07 in T20 Internationals. which earned him a spot nominee for the Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year award.

Fans now have the opportunity to cast their votes for their preferred T20I and Emerging players on the official website of ICC Cricket. Additional categories will be made available as the ICC unveils more nominees in the coming two days.

The announcement of the winners of the ICC Awards 2023 is scheduled to take place in January 2024.
