Darvin Ham Rejects Prime Opportunity to Join Budenholzer’s Elite Suns Staff

Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham has declined an opportunity to join Mike Budenholzer’s coaching staff with the Phoenix Suns. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Budenholzer attempted to recruit Ham after being hired as the Suns’ head coach last month. However, Ham decided to pass on the offer after two demanding seasons with the Lakers.

Darvin Ham’s Tenure with the Lakers

A mix of success and challenges marked Ham’s stint with the Lakers. After joining the Lakers in 2022, he led the team to the Western Conference Finals in his first season. The 2023-24 season, however, was less consistent. Despite winning the inaugural In-Season Tournament championship, the Lakers struggled in the latter half of the season, finishing with a 47-35 record. The Denver Nuggets ultimately eliminated them in five games during the first round of the playoffs.

Throughout the 2023-24 season, Ham faced criticism for his decision-making and difficulties in motivating a veteran roster headlined by LeBron James and Anthony Davis. These struggles culminated in his firing a month ago, with the Lakers still searching for his replacement.

Darvin Ham’s History with Budenholzer

Ham’s connection with Budenholzer runs deep, dating back to their time together with the Atlanta Hawks in 2013. Ham followed Budenholzer to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2018, where they played crucial roles in the Bucks’ 2021 NBA championship run. Given their successful history, it was no surprise that Budenholzer sought to reunite with Ham in Phoenix.

After Ham declined, the Suns pivoted by inviting David Fizdale to remain on Budenholzer’s staff. Fizdale, who was initially offered a front office role, will now serve as an assistant coach. This move ensures continuity and adds a seasoned presence to Budenholzer’s coaching team.

Understandably, Ham might need a break following his tumultuous tenure with the Lakers. His decision to step back for a bit could be a strategic move to recharge and reassess his career options. With his track record and experience, Ham will likely have more opportunities in the future, whether in coaching or other roles within the NBA.

Darvin Ham’s decision to pass on joining the Suns highlights his desire for a hiatus after a challenging period with the Lakers. Meanwhile, the Suns have adjusted their strategy, ensuring they have a strong coaching staff to support Budenholzer in his new role.
