Brydon Carse Given Three-Month Ban for Betting Breaches

The pacer has received a three-month suspension

England and Durham fast bowler Brydon Carse has received a three-month suspension following an anti-corruption investigation by the Cricket Regulator. Carse admitted to breaching gambling regulations by placing 303 bets on cricket matches from 2017 to 2019. While these bets did not involve matches he played in, reports suggest they included Durham games.

Considering his cooperation with the investigation, Carse’s initial 16-month ban was reduced to three months due to suspended time. This suspension will keep him off the field until late August, effectively ruling him out of England’s upcoming Test series against the West Indies.

ECB has stated that: “We take these matters extremely seriously and do not condone any form of anti-corruption breach in cricket.

“We support the Cricket Regulator’s decision and their consideration of the mitigating factors in Brydon’s case. He has co-operated and shown remorse for his actions. We are satisfied that Brydon has shown growth in the five years since this breach and has demonstrated a greater understanding of his responsibilities.

“We are hopeful that his case can serve as an educational example for other cricketers.”

Despite the ban, the 28-year-old Carse boasts a promising international career. He has represented England in 17 limited-overs matches and even received a call-up for the 2023 World Cup in India. His talent was further recognized with a two-year central contract from the ECB.

Though not yet featuring in Test matches, Carse was identified by Rob Key, a key figure in English cricket, as a prospect. With James Anderson and Stuart Broad nearing retirement, Carse was seen as someone who could fill the gap in England’s red-ball bowling attack.

“The Cricket Regulator takes any breach of integrity or misconduct rules seriously and I would encourage any participant, from within the professional game, who has gambled on cricket to come forward and not wait to be discovered.

“The Cricket Regulator understands the many challenges participants can face and will handle cases fairly, with understanding and support for anyone who wishes to come forward. We also encourage any participant struggling with any welfare concerns to seek assistance from the PCA or other trusted professional source.”
