Adam Silver’s Statement on the Passing of Jerry West

“Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for over 60 years,” Silver stated. West’s career highlights include being an NBA champion and an All-Star for all 14 of his playing seasons. His ability to perform under pressure earned him the nickname ‘Mr. Clutch’. Notably, he was the league’s first Finals MVP, embodying the spirit of competitiveness.

West’s influence extended beyond the court. His four-decade association with the Los Angeles Lakers included successful stints as a head coach and an executive. “Jerry’s four decades with the Lakers also included a successful stint as a head coach and a remarkable run in the front office,” Adam Silver noted. West’s executive career is legendary, having helped build eight championship teams, solidifying his status as one of the greatest sports executives.

Hall of Fame Contributor

In recognition of his contributions, Jerry West will be enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this October as a contributor, making history as the first person inducted as both a player and a contributor. This honor reflects his unparalleled influence on the game.
